La Vallée de Jacmel
Position Geographique
La Vallée is located in the Southeastern part of Haiti, about 56 miles from Port-au- Prince, the capital, and about 11 miles from the coastal City of Jacmel. According to government statistics, La Vallée is estimated to have a population of about 36,188 people and a literacy rate approximately 85%.
Administration
The administrative district of La Vallée is Ridoré, which is seated at about 2,625 ft. above sea level. Within Ridoré, there is a tribunal and the commissariat of police. The plateau of Ridoré offers an amazing view of the surrounding localities including a multitude of peaks and valleys, the Caribbean Sea, and on a clear day one can even see the beautiful island of Gonâve.
Economique Ressources
The main occupation and source of revenue for Valleens stems from agriculture. La Vallée is an agrarian community that produces popular cultural foods, such as mais, haricots, millets, ignames, patates, bananes maniocs, oranges, chadeques, and tangerines. Valleens also raise livestock, such as chickens, goats, pigs and cattle.
Education
There are two old catholic schools at Ridore : named Léonce Mégie school and St. Paul school, which provide education from elementary to secondary grade levels. Another secondary school Lycée Philippe Jules has a roster of approximately 750 students and about 50 teachers, one must mention the Polyvalente University in Ridore. There is also a public library to further the education and knowledge base of Valleens. There are two other secondary schools in Ternier and Muzac, which are two localities in La Vallée, more than fifty eight schools are dispersed all over la Vallée and the number of students who attended are twelve thousand.
Prayer Places
Other places worth mentioning are the historical church of St. Jean Baptiste at Ridore, which commemorated its 100th year Anniversary last year. There are several churches that are assessable to Valleens: The Sacred Heart Church (Muzac), St. Pie X Church (Duré), St. Rose Church (Point-du-Jour), and St. Claire Church ( auTuff) and the Chapel at Morne-a- Bruler.
Health
Hospital Saint Joseph offers basic health care to the Valleens and the communauty near la Vallee, and also there are two dispensaries and on clinic.
Commerces
At Ridore one can find the Fonkose bank, the communaute Caisse d’Epargne, the morgue, a mini-market to purchase daily commodities, the public open market operated every Friday, many restaurants and small groceries stores. Ternier is home to the most modern and beautiful bakery in the country and is equipped with modern machineries to make breads and pastries such as pates, comparettes, and bonbon sirop.
Loisir Places
For those looking for a place to stay in La Vallée, there are two hotels: the Prague Hotel and the Auberge du Mont Saint Jean. The luxurious Auberge du Mont Saint Jean has a restaurant, a swimming pool and a discotheque to accommodate the diaspora, as well as late night entertainment to delight of local tourists. For those visiting La Vallée, there are many attractions like the Chute of l’Etang, the Cave of Séjourné, the Blue Bassin, and the Site of Fort Blockauss.
Projet a long term
The next big challenge for Fraternité Valleenne is to build a professional school for the youth which will enable them to learn locally after they finish secondary school, rather than having to move away. With your continued support this goal is obtainable. Our mission is to improve the living conditions and ease the socioeconomic development of Valleens to help our fellow Haitians achieve a better quality of life.
